Challenge

The Land Intelligence and Targeting Programme (LITP), formerly Land ISTAR, is putting a sovereign digital intelligence and targeting capability into the hands of the British Army. The technology is genuinely advanced. The problem? The team delivering it had little time to explain it, and needed partners who understood the Army from the inside as well as the craft of communications.

One senior leader described ZODIAC as a "future data fabric" you "cannot google". With several capabilities converging, a new programme identity taking shape, and audiences from soldiers to Ministers, LITP needed one story people could understand, repeat and back, and a partner who could tell it.

Solution

We stepped in as an extension of the team. Canny's people have served in this sector, so we did not need long to get going. We started by listening, using stakeholder interviews and user feedback from Exercise Titan Storm to find where understanding broke down.

Then we built one narrative and made it easy to use, with Lines to Take that kept every briefing telling the same story. Around it sat a much wider programme of work: briefing packs for senior and ministerial audiences, infographics and a multi-domain animation, branded assets and templates, a senior responsible officer video interview, a BFBS SitRep podcast, press releases and articles, a RUSI panel, LinkedIn content and training, and the communications plans that tied it all together.

And we measured honestly, against a five-objective plan and structured stakeholder feedback, rather than assuming it was working.

Success

Announcements we supported, including SERPENS AWL, were carried widely across specialist defence media. LITP LinkedIn content recruited 2,500 new followers, with one post achieving engagement more than four times the channel average, and the BFBS SitRep episode held 79% of its listeners through to the end.

Most importantly, Canny supported briefings for a number of senior Ministry of Defence officials, one of which led to the sign-off of a major new strand of the programme. By the end of the contract, stakeholders were describing the briefings and rolling narrative as the source of their understanding. The Programme Director has told us the benefits have been tangible and that they would be very happy to work with Canny again.

"We have been really happy with the work you have done and have seen the tangible benefits. We would be very happy working with you again in the future. You and your team delivered an essential service that we did not have the time to do effectively ourselves, and have added real value."
